Submited by Lissy's brother, David Freeman.
Lissy was killed along with her mother in a one-car highway accident on US Highway 51 between Vaiden and Canton on March 11, 1973. She was 22 years old at the time of her death.
Both mother and daughter were living in Jackson at the time and both were employed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Lissy worked for the director of the newborn center and had recently helped complete a message on what the state of Mississippi and the hospital were trying to do for maternal and infant care. This report was presented at the annual March of Dimes meeting in New York City and received a standing ovation from the audience.
Lissy was engaged to and was to marry Larry Clark of Taylorsville, MS in just a few weeks. She and Larry had met while Larry was in law school at Ole Miss and Lissy was working there. She and her mother had driven to Oxford for the weekend to do some shopping and make some arrangements for the upcoming wedding. They were returning to Jackson on a Sunday afternoon when the accident occurred. Although I-55 had been under construction and many of the construction deadlines had passed, this accident occurred in one of the sections where the Interstate was not open and travelers had to take Highway 51. A highway patrolman who was behind the car at the time of the accident oberved the car pull out to pass another car and veer too far to the left where it struck a bridge abutment. Lissy was driving and was killed instantly. Her mother died later after having been transported to the University Medical Center. |
